Harrow School

Overview:

Harrow School is an academically selective independent school for approximately 830 boys aged 12–19. The school was founded in 1572 by John Lyon, with a vision to provide a free education for 30 boys from the parish of Harrow on the Hill.

Harrow provides a truly outstanding environment for talented boys who love learning and have the potential to make a real difference in life. An education at Harrow is about learning and scholarship, nurtured by teachers who are leading lights in their chosen fields. Our holistic education encompasses a breadth of experience beyond the classroom through sport, the creative and performing arts, Harrow Rifle Corps and many other character-forming activities. Our pastoral care is exemplary and, vitally, we focus on preparing young people for life after school at their chosen university and beyond – equipping them to become suitably qualified and confident to lead, serve and be of good influence. These principles underpin everything we do and achieve at Harrow.

Sport enriches the life of every boy throughout his time at Harrow. With afternoon games five times a week, a choice of over 30 different sports, fixtures against other schools and the chance to compete regularly in House matches, boys are kept healthy and active. Under the guidance of some of the country’s leading coaches, boys develop their skills, character and confidence. Through games such as rugby, soccer, cricket and Harrow football, they learn how to be team players. We place equal emphasis on the many individual sports we offer, which cultivate resilience, self-discipline and enjoyment.

We believe that a Harrovian’s confidence, ability to work in a team, leadership potential, ability to serve others, strength of character, creativity and imagination are things that really count in life and make a boy from Harrow stand out and ready to make his mark in the world.

Harrow is committed to widening access and, guided by our founder John Lyon’s principle, enabling boys with exceptional talent and potential, from north-west London and further afield, whose existing financial circumstances would otherwise limit their opportunity to do so, to benefit from a holistic education at Harrow.
